A Good Georgian Single Chair c1780
This is an elegant Georgian single chair of the
Chippendale period, in a good quality dense
mahogany. The shaped back plats are well
carved in a restrained style with acanthus leaf and
training harebell carving to the top. The
serpentine shaped crest rail is bordered by simple
paper scroll carving.
The generously proportioned stuff-over seat has been
traditionally upholstered (recently renewed) using
horsehair and sits over sturdy square legs joined by
an H-stretcher.
Overall, the chair is in very good original condition
with no cracks or breaks anywhere, although the
cross section of the H-stretcher appears to be a
later replacement, carried out probably some decades
ago. This is quite a common repair as the
stretchers get broken through people putting their
feet on them over years. There is no evidence
of warping or wood worm.
The chair has never been stripped or polished, thus
retaining its original waxed finish with a good
nutty brown colour.
